How to apply lipstick like a pro

We don't know about you, but for us lipstick is one of life's greatest joys.

While in theory we all know how to apply lipstick (usually on-the-go while vaguely looking in the mirror, then pursing your lips together), if you want it to look great, suit you and last all day (or night) then you need to employ a few little tricks of the trade.

You see, there's actually quite a lot to consider - the lip line, whether the colour is going to bleed, if you’re wearing the right shade, whether you need more than one coat.

So, if you find your lipstick often goes patchy, feathers or totally comes off after your morning coffee, here are a few tips from one of our makeup artists Olivia on how to apply lipstick like a pro...

One

Start by applying your favourite lip balm to prep your lips. If you pop it on while you're applying your base it'll have plenty of time to sink in. Blot your lips with a tissue to absorb any excess and if you have it, apply a lip primer - this will make your lips feel slightly tacky and in turn, help the liner stay in place for longer.

Two

Making sure your lip liner is sharp, draw a diagonal line from the peak of your cupid's bow to the bottom of your top lip (on both sides), crossing the second line you draw over the first to create an 'X' shape.

Next, starting from the outer corner of your top lip, feather the pencil inwards using short strokes. Do the same on the other side and then repeat on your bottom lip (starting from the outer corners will make your lips look fuller).
